Two Elgin County fishermen have been fined for catching and trying to kill a snapping turtle.

Natural Resources officials say Daniel Ste-Marie pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined 500 dollars for hunting a game reptile without a licence.

Jeffrey Bourgeois was found guilty of the same offence and ended up being fined two-thousand dollars.

Court heard conservation officers spotted the men fishing along the Thames River in Oxford County in July 2017, and found a severely injured snapping turtle hidden under a pail.

The hunting of snapping turtles in Ontario was banned last year.
