TWO NEIGHBORING HEALTH UNITS ANNOUNCE PLANS TO MERGE

Two neighboring counties Health Units have announced plans to merge.

Intent to join has been declared between the Elgin St. Thomas Public Health Unit and the Oxford County Public Health Unit.

Elgin St. Thomas Board of Health Chair Bernie Wiehle says the merger is intended to be completed by the Spring of next year.

The Provincial government has said that they would like to see the number of health units in Ontario reduced.

When asked about job security for current employees, Wiehle was not quick to guarantee anything.

Wiehle went on to say that there are a number of senior staff between the two boards retiring within the next couple of years.

He says that he does not anticipate any layoffs in the short term as they are already short staffed given their current needs.

Details like a name and funding allocation within the proposed new Health Unit are all things that still need to be worked out.
