The first hurdle has been cleared for a proposed six story apartment building in Downtown Simcoe.

Council unanimously approved the development, which could feature up to 45 units, and a public gym on the main floor.

Aurelio Baglione, the owner of the Brick building in Simcoe, saw the potential in the current property.

There is no plan to add additional parking at the moment, but they may consider opening up a neighboring property down the road for some vehicles.

They are also looking at the option of making these apartments a form of affordable housing with some grant funding available to them to do so.

Baglione expects planning to be done on the property in the next nine months with construction being completed in 18 to 24 months following that.
