PROVINCE TO UNVEIL PACKAGE TO ASSIST BUSINESSES WITH MINIMUM WAGE HIKE

Debate on a major labour reform bill is set to start today in Ontario's legislature.

The bill would hike the minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour in 2019, provide equal pay for part-time workers, increase vacation entitlements and expand personal emergency leave.

Public hearings were held this summer, and once the bill passes second reading, it will be sent out for a second round of hearings.

Business groups have been campaigning hard against the phase-in period for the minimum wage hike, saying the increase will be too much to absorb.

The government has said it will unveil a package of offsets this fall to help businesses cope with increased cost.
