COUNCIL STEAMED AFTER GROUP HIRED TO REVITALIZE OUR DOWNTOWNS DISAPPEARS

Hopes were high when the South Coast Business Coalition strolled into Town Hall in January of 2016 and said they were looking at addressing our struggling downtowns.

Originally, a Mayor's Task Force was to be set up with Norfolk County taking the helm with business leaders to revitalize our downtown cores, but it was asked to be left in the Coalitions hands and handled by the private sector with council's help if needed on certain issues.

A firm called Cobalt Connect was then hired by the Business Coalition to look at our downtowns and complete a study. The findings of that study were later reported back to council in November.

In February of this year, the Business Coalition was scheduled to give a deputation with a "Downtown Update" but was canceled last minute.

Since then...silence.

Council asked staff Tuesday night if any update was expected to come before our elected officials and was told nothing is in the books.

That did not sit well with Councillor Jim Oliver, who asked our staff to approach the group and get a solid answer.

Councillor Peter Black also asked what the status was of a previous council motion for that Mayor's Task Force idea after hearing silence from the group.

That information should be coming back in the coming weeks.
