It's one of the most prestigious honours awarded by the Ontario Provincial Police to an officer.

Norfolk OPP Const. Ed Sanchuk has been named as the Laurie Hawkins Community Service Officer of the Year.

He received the honour at an awards ceremony last Thursday afternoon.

Sanchuk was chosen by his fellow officers in uniform.

The Community Service Award honours an officer who, among many other things, puts a "consistent focus on service to others, as well as someone who adds value to the community."

The award was created in 2009, the year after Const. Hawkins and her family were killed in a carbon monoxide accident in their home.
